How long does a session go for?
Normally 1 hour but expect your first session to take approximately 90 minutes for talking and gathering information about your presenting issues to develop a treatment plan.
How long until i see results?
Quite often clients of mine leave feeling at least 50% better after their first treatment, although some may not feel any different at first but will usually notice improvements between 24-72 hours, in some instances, certain people need several treatments before they notice a change, everybody is different, it depends upon the individuals capacity to heal and their presenting issues.
How many treatments will i need?
In acute cases you may only need the one treatment? If you suffer chronic issues you should allow 3-6 sessions spacing them a week apart, its often beneficial to have a break for a few weeks to allow your body to realign in its own time. Your body will let you know when it needs another Bowen Treatment.
Do i have to take my clothes off?
No you don't have to take your clothes off! unless you are wearing jeans or other heavy items, some clients like to get down to there underwear but that is an individual choice. Bowen can be performed effectively through loose fitting light clothing.
What kind of oil do you use?
No oils are used in a Bowen treatment.
Is Bowen like massage?
No its not like a massage. Rolling movements are performed on specific areas of the body like tendons, acupressure points, ligaments and muscles. After a set of moves are performed there is a pause for approximately 2 minutes, this allows your body time to absorb the information sent to the area via the nervous system. Massage is also contraindicated with acute inflammation, whereas Bowen is recommended in this instance as it has the ability to reduce inflammation within the body.
Will it hurt?
No it should not hurt, more pressure may be used to reach deep muscles like the Hamstrings and the Psoas but a good Bowen therapist adjusts the pressure they use to suit each individual.
But i'm old, is it really worth trying?
Most definitely! I have seen first hand the many benefits elderly clients have received with Bowen Therapy, improving the quality of life is not uncommon.
Can you have Bowen when your pregnant?
Yes! Bowen is safe during all stages of pregnancy.
I'm not in any pain but i have a lot of stress, will it help me?
Yes it definitely can, Bowen switches your nervous system to parasympathetic mode (rest and repair).
How does Bowen work?
There are many theories on how Bowen works so well, in addition to re-balancing the autonomic nervous system, Bowen moves and procedures may reset the body to heal itself by activating, through the nervous and endocrine systems among others like the fascia and lymphatics, Bowen moves set up vibrational patterns which bring the body back into balance and harmony, some of the procedures activate draining of the lymphatic system stimulating the immune system, detoxification is often initiated during a Bowen session, thereby improving the body's ability to function at a cellular level.
Where did Bowen originate?
In Australia mate! yep its homegrown... The late Tom Bowen was from Geelong in Victoria, he developed this wonderful technique in the 1950's with no formal training of bodywork, when asked how did he know what to do he said "its a gift from God".
Can i get a rebate from my health fund?
Yes you can if your fund approves Bowen, many do some don't, check with your fund. I am a qualified registered Bowen practitioner with a provider number BAA 9731.
